Elon Musk acknowledged Saturday that SpaceX deliberately restricted Ukraine’s Starlink satellite internet service, disrupting critical military communications and drone operations for more than a week.

Musk defended the decision, arguing that Ukraine had violated Starlink’s terms of service by using the civilian satellite network for offensive drone strikes. He maintained that the U.S. government controlled restrictions involving Starshield, the military-grade satellite system supporting Ukraine’s defense operations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Saturday that satellite speeds had been restored following diplomatic discussions with Washington. Ukrainian officials said the restoration was essential for military communications, battlefield logistics, and defending against Russian drone attacks.

The controversy has further strained relations between Washington and Kyiv. President Donald Trump denied ordering the restrictions, while Vice President JD Vance suggested possible White House coordination with Musk. Senior administration officials have denied involvement.

The developments come amid renewed diplomatic efforts to end the war. Russia has agreed to resume three-way negotiations with Ukraine and the United States next month, while a localized ceasefire was reached around the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky.

Meanwhile, fighting continues. Russian strikes killed one person and wounded two others in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. Ukrainian forces launched attacks against Russian industrial and military-related facilities, including a chemical plant, an electronics factory, and targets as far away as western Siberia.

The incident raises broader questions about the influence of private technology companies over military operations and the relationship between commercial satellite providers and national governments during wartime.
